Assumption Of Mary

Assumption of Mary

Pope Pius XII, in 1950, proclaimed the Assumption of Mary a dogma of the Catholic Church in these words: “The Immaculate mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life was assumed body and soul into heaven”

As we pray the rosary, at the Joyful Mystery of The Assumption, we might reflect on the origin of the dogma and have a special thought for the Holy Father’s aspiration that the Assumption of Our Lady would bring lasting benefits to the whole human race.

As we celebrate the feast of the Assumption on August 15th we are reminded of the importance of the body in our spirituality. There are many instances in the bible that demonstrate, through the miracles of Jesus, how important it is to heal the body, while at the same time being aware that we must take care of the soul. When he cured lepers, made the lame walk, cured the blind, forgave sinners, he also reminded them to “go and sin no more”. The wellbeing of each person is important to God no matter his or her age, health or station in life.

We believe that Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven. This reinforces our belief in the bodily resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, and strengthens our hope of being accepted into life everlasting in the heavenly kingdom.

The feast of the Assumption directs our thoughts to eternity and gives us the hope that we too will follow Our Lady into the glory of heaven when our earthly life is ended.
