The Season of Advent

“At this Christmas when Christ comes, will He find a warm heart?
Mark the season of Advent by loving and
serving the others with God's own love and concern.”
Mother Teresa, Love: A Fruit Always in Season

Advent and Christmas

Advent and Christmas

Advent is a time of preparation.of getting ready to celebrate God's love for us by sending us his son, Jesus Christ. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives allows us to appreciate this great act of love and strengthens us in our resolve to respond with our love in return.

During Advent we come to realise that within ourselves lies a tension between love of God and the temptations of our self centred lives. To prepare well we must take time to pray, to curb our selfish desires and to reach out and serve others.

Scripture tells us that it is best to live by the light and to remember that all our deeds are seen. God's presence in Jesus Christ is the light by which we should walk, for our own good , for the good of our neighbour, for the good of society.

The many blessings we receive in our journey through Advent will bring us once again to a central reality of our faith, the birth of the baby Jesus, the incarnation of the Son of God. With Mary's consent to do God's will, she conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us". (John 1:14)

The spirit of Christmas is of sharing, giving and thinking of others, so may we all experience a joyful celebration of Christ's love for us this Christmas as we sing

  • Come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant
  • Come ye Oh come ye, to Bethlehem
  • Come and behold Him
  • Born the King of Angels
  • Come let us adore Him
  • Christ the Lord
